When the foals that I've been talking so much about grow up, they go into the training program here at the Circle C. This week the guys are starting all of the two-year-olds.
Today marks their third ride. They began on Monday by bringing each horse into the round pen, catching them, and flagging them from the back of a trained horse (like the horse on the far left in the picture above). Once the two-year-old was accustomed to the flag being waved around them and touching them all over, he or she was brushed and saddled. The saddled horses were turned loose so they could move around and get used to the feel of it on their backs. Then each horse was mounted and ponied around while the rider petted them and moved around in the saddle.
Today they are no longer being ponied, and are working on forward motion, yielding their hindquarters, and a little steering. In two more days they'll ride them out into the pasture and hopefully get where they want to go!
